AmeriCorps Featured Member - Jacob
Jacob is a member of MACOG’s first AmeriCorps cohort serving with MACOG as a South Bend Bike Ambassador. Jacob partners with the City of South Bend and other partners to encourage bicycling. He will be available about three hours a week to teach residents how to repair their bicycles at the Charles Black Center. Jacob also assists with bike valet at public events where cleaning and minor repairs are provided to encourage active transportation, and ensures mobile bike racks are available at public events. Jacob will also be coordinating with area community organizations, like La Casa da Amistad, to regularly provide bike cleaning and minor maintenance for residents to reduce at least one of the barriers to biking in South Bend.

What AmeriCorps activities have been most meaningful to you?
My favorite activity that I have been a part of so far has been the retreat at Bradford Woods. I love the outdoors! The event was a perfect opportunity for me to come out of my comfort zone and connect with others in nature.
How did you find out about AmeriCorps and what led you to this role?
I found out about AmeriCorps from a good friend of mine. I had been volunteering with the South Bend Bike Garage, so I was extremely excited to hear about the role and how well it fit me.
What’s next after your AmeriCorps service is completed?
As of right now I am undecided, but AmeriCorps has given me so many opportunities in my community to consider after the program ends.
What excites you most in your service?
I am extremely excited to make South Bend more bicycle-friendly place. I am looking forward to aid in the removal of some of the barriers that have prevented people from cycling in the past. I really want to see the cycling community increase in South Bend and see more and more people on bikes each day.
